About Us


The Association is dedicated to the provision of high quality, professional services to individual and families.  The objectives of our programs are to support individuals and families to function in healthy and productive ways in their personal life and in their community.  This is achieved through access to enhanced mental health, wellness, emotional stability, social and life skill development, and the ability to make healthier behaviour choices.  The Association believes that each individual has the right to maximize his/her potential and, therefore, endorses service delivery initiatives that support the empowerment and self-determination of persons served.  We believe this can be achieved through the provision of housing, support, employment, and crisis intervention services that model best practices and that transfer skills to the individuals and families served.

Although the Association operates as an independent Society it also functions as a Branch of the National Canadian Mental Health Association.  CMHA National has the distinction of being one of Canada's oldest non-profit, charitable organizations.  Each year, CMHA Divisions and branches across Canada provide direct service to more than 100,000 Canadians through the combined efforts of more than 10,000 volunteers and staff in locally run organizations in all provinces and territories.

Board of Directors

Corporate Responsibility
The Board of Directors is responsible for corporate governance of the organization, on behalf of the membership, and is accountable under the Societies Act of British Columbia.
It is the responsibility of the board to:

* establish and maintain the purpose and direction of the organization
* maintain effective communication with members of the Society
* ensure that the organization is effectively and efficiently managed
* establish organization-wide policies

Corporate Statement
The success of the organization in meeting the needs of its clients is determined, in large measure, by the deliberations, actions, and policy formulations of its governing Board. In that regard, the Board of Directors, who have collective responsibility for the organization's management in the broadest sense, also hold particular individual responsibility to conduct their personal affairs in an appropriate manner.

Thus:
Corporately the Board is responsible for:

* the ongoing evaluation of the organization's direction, mission, and its effectiveness
* the description of the position of the Executive Director and the selection, appointment and regular evaluation of the Executive Director
* the establishment of the governing structure of the organization and, recognition of where policy-setting ends and administration begins
* the financial integrity of the organization
* development and approval of bylaws covering such topics as election of officers, committee structures, meetings, and voting procedures
* the assumption of powers inherent in corporate status such as the power to sue, to enter into contracts, and to acquire, hold, and sell property as outlined in the Act
* the regular assessment of the Board's performance and the performance of its standing advisory committees
* the creation of a climate for innovation and progress within the organization
